Our New Playground Art Mural

We are pleased to have a new colourful mural, brightening both the playground and the spirits of our pupils, thanks to a joyful art project led by local artist Eloisa Henderson-Figueroa in collaboration with the whole school community.

At a time when creativity and wellbeing are more important than ever, the project has brought together art, music and dance to inspire self-expression, playfulness and confidence in our pupils.

Eloisa worked with every year group in a series of hands-on workshops, encouraging children to experiment with collage, doodles and expressive mark-making. Pupils were supported to take artistic risks, exploring colour, pattern and texture, while learning that creativity can be a space for joy, curiosity and courage.

“As their art teacher, I saw their confidence grow during the workshops,” said Miss Osborne. “Some pupils who were often hesitant in their creating were suddenly really going for it. The atmosphere was buzzing with excitement and positivity; you could feel that sense of freedom and playfulness spreading throughout the school.”

Evie (Year 6) says the mural “brightens her day", and Elemie (Year 6) said of the workshop that “she loved not being told what to do, just to do what you want, within a boundary.”

Music and dance were also woven into the sessions, helping pupils to express themselves through movement and rhythm, and encouraging a multi-sensory approach to creativity. The final mural design, developed from our pupils’ own drawings and ideas, has transformed the school playground wall into a vibrant celebration of imagination, togetherness and joy.

Studies show that participation in the arts can have a powerful impact on wellbeing. Research from University College London found that children who engage in arts activities most days score 32% higher on measures of self-esteem than those who take part less often. Projects like Keble’s mural bring these benefits to life, giving pupils the creative confidence that extends far beyond the classroom.

Reflecting on the project Miss Osborne said “it shows how art can do more than decorate; it can connect, uplift and enhance wellbeing. It has been wonderful to see how creativity can build confidence and community at the same time.”

The Artist Eloisa said “It was an absolute joy to run workshops with the children to gather ideas for the mural in the playground. There was laughter, dancing and so much creativity. The aim for my workshops is to create an inclusive environment that supports children's mental health, by encouraging creativity, confidence and most of all, play! We had children who came out of their shells and made the most amazing artwork, which then fed into the mural design. Each child can see that they contributed to the artwork and now have a sense of pride over what they created.”

A big thank you goes to our parents, whose fundraising, enthusiasm and recommendations made the project possible. Their support reflects the strong community spirit that makes this local school such special places to grow, learn and flourish.
