Our Curriculum

At Keble Prep, we prepare our pupils for life beyond Prep School and equip them with the necessary skills to take on Senior School.

"Teaching is inventive and interdisciplinary, stimulating plenty of reflection by the pupils about their learning." - Good Schools Guide, Summer 2023

Our curriculum is divided into three key phases:

  • The Pre-Prep (Nursery to Year 2)
  • Key Stage 2 (Year 3 to Year 6)
  • Key Stage 3 (Year 7 and Year 8)

Pre-Prep (Nursery to Year 2)

We offer a dynamic and well-rounded education that develops the abilities and enthusiasm of every child. We believe that the environment created at Keble allows all pupils to be academically challenged, whilst also instilling the social values and learning attitudes required to succeed in an ever-changing world. Our pupils access a broad curriculum which places emphasis on their physical, creative, academic and personal development. This is delivered through a range of teaching strategies, coupled with the latest technology. All of this combines to make Keble a school where every pupil can achieve, succeed and grow.

Key Stage 2 (Year 3 to Year 6)

In Years 3 and 4, we introduce a more diversified curriculum with an even greater focus on specialist subjects such as Science, Drama, Art, Music, Computer Science, Physical Education, and sports through our games programme of football, rugby, netball, and cricket. Specialist form teachers are responsible for teaching English, Maths, Humanities, and, most importantly, the pastoral care of every child in their form group..

In Year 5 and above, all lessons are taught by specialist teachers who also serve as form teachers. The children gain responsibility and independence as they move around the school to different classrooms, where organisation and time management are key.

As part of the Year 5 curriculum, we start to prepare the children for formal examinations with additional VR (Verbal Reasoning) and NVR (Non-Verbal Reasoning) lessons with the English and Maths Departments as we prepare children for 13+ places or 11+ places at Grammar or state schools.

Our philosophy and focus for every teacher is ‘getting the best out of every child’ and ensuring all children are challenged to show courage and overcome fear in any challenge. We involve your child in a carefully crafted combination of practical and study-based classes in a positive, stimulating environment.

Key Stage 3 (Year 7 and Year 8)

During the senior years of Year 7 and 8, all children follow the ISEB ‘Common Entrance’ curriculum, which provides a clear academic focus for the children and great preparation for future GCSEs. We also provide countless opportunities for all pupils to enhance the skills they have garnered throughout their pivotal years, such as leadership opportunities and experiences.

All children benefit from ‘Quality First Teaching’ across every area of the curriculum. Where additional needs are identified for individual pupils, we make reasonable adjustments and implement recommendations from external professionals to support their learning. We monitor the progress of all pupils and implement interventions to support them as necessary. We challenge all pupils with their learning and extend those who are ‘more able’ in particular areas of the curriculum to ensure that every child achieves their full potential.

We are proud of the achievements of our pupils and help every child to discover their strengths. Throughout their time in the Prep School years, we work in partnership with you to nurture your child and feel privileged to play a role in enabling them to grow into young people who are well-equipped to play productive roles in society in later years.

The academic year is filled with many exciting activities, from the House competitions throughout the year through Sports, Arts, and English, Music Recitals, Carol Services, exciting day trips, residential cultural trips to Belgium and France, to our amazing drama production at the end of the summer term.
